BRITISH GOODS
PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN MOOTED PRIVATE FIRMS TO CO-OPERATE COMPREHENSIVE EFFORT By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Sydney "Sun” Cable.) LONDON, June 11. To relieve unemployment and assist trade, the Federation of British Industries suggests that the Government should initiate a central fund for an Empire publicity campaign, spreading over two or three years, urging ti e public to buy British goods in' preference to foreign wherever the price and quality are comparable. The fund would be in addition to the amount of £1,000,000 which the Government is allocating to assist Empire products. Private publicity schemes could be co-ordinated with the proposed campaign, resulting in a comprehensive effort similar to Britain’s wartime pubIlicity schemes. The chief media should lie newspapers and posters, supplemented by publio
meetings, broadcasting, picture films, and local shopping weeks. The federation expresses the opinion that the Government would receive the ’voluntary co-operation of many trade and social organisations, which would reduce the costs. A federation official said: “We have not suggested the amount the Government should allocate. The total Government and private expenditure should be many millions. The chief enemies of British manufacturers are middlemen, who buy cheap foreign goods, and push their sale against British goods.”
