SEARCH FOR AMUNDSEN

DIRIGIBLE NOT SUITABLE APPEAL TO U.S.A. REJECTED. Australian « n, l N 7 Cnhlo Association WASHINGTON, June 9. Air Curtis Wilbur declared that the Navy Department was not going to start a wild goose chase into the Arctic in response to an appeal of the Norwegian Aero Club—through the North American newspaper alliance — that the dirigible Los Angeles or Shenandoah should attempt to find Amundsen. He said there wore two great practical difficulties, the Arctic temperature, which would cause rain and snow to freeze in layers on the envelope of the ship, and the tremendous extra weight would cause a forced landing. There was a danger also that the cold would freeze tho lubricating oil of the engine. Air AVilbur indicated that three naval amphibian airplanes attached to the MacMillan expedition, sailing from Boston on June 17th, would endeavour to find Amundsen.
