BALLOON MISHAPS

CREWS PICKED UP AT SEA OTHERS LAND IN FRANCE. Renter's Telecrram BRUSSELS, June 9. Eight more balloons participating in Vhv. Gordon Behuett race have landed in France, comprising three Italian, two British, and one American, one Belgian, and one Swiss. The Spanish Besperio fell into the sea. The crow was picked up at sea by a steamer and landed at Brittany A wireless message from the German steamer Vaterland reports that she followed a drifting airship, which showed an S’.O.S. signal 20 miles west of Ushant. It proved to be the American balloon Goodyear 111. The Vaterland saved the crew. Advices from Ghent state that a pigeon message from the Belgian balloon Belgica says the pilot is attempting to proceed southward, as it is impossible to manoeuvre to England. Much ballast has been thrown out.
