Air A. O. Alclntosh has been reelected chairman of the Wanganui County Council. Mr W. Alorrison was re-elected chairman of the Waitotara County Council at the annual meeting. Captain J. Dittmer, N.Z.S.C., and Captain Hovey, D.A.R.G., Defence Headquarters, are visiting Hamilton. Air and Airs H. G. Radford and family, of Wellington, left for a trip through Australia by the Ulimaroa. His Excellency Sir Charles Fergusson has accepted the position of patron of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Air H. P. West, district traffic manager of railways, Dunedin, and Air W. I. Hessoll, district traffic manager, Invercargill, are in Wellington attending a conference of traffic managers. The “Times’ Alasterton correspondent telegraphed last night that the borough by-el xtion resulted in C. B. AlcCymont being returned with 812 votes. The other candidate, F. C. Evans, polled 327 votes. Mr L. W. Louisson, Clerk of the Court at Tauranga, has received notice of transfer to Hokitika, where he will take tlie position of Clerk of tho Court and Registrar of the Supremo Court. Air Eugene O’Neill, of Dunedin, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the War Pensions Appeal Board, created by the resignation of Dr T. Fergus. Dr. J. S. Elliott is acting on the board during the absence of Dr W. E. Herbert m the United States. Mr C. B. Tasker, of the local mail staff, G.P.0., has been appointed to the position of mail agent, R.M.S. Alakura, and will take up his duties early next month. Messrs D. C. Sclater and S. Bailey nave been promoted to the positions of assistant mail supervisors. Sir Thomas and Lady Alackenzie returned from England yesterday. In a fear days Lady Alackenzie goes to Auckland while Sir Thomas leaves for Christchurch, Dunedin, and possibly Invercargill in connection with business of various companies. He will return to Wellington for the meeting of the Legislative Council. Air Hubert Burnett, of Woodville, who has been forced to retire from practice because o* failing eyesight, has resigned his position as borough solicitor. His resignation has been accepted with regret, and it has been decided to place on record an appreciation of his long and faithful services to the community. It has also been decided to call a public meeting in order that further appreciation of Air Burnett’s services may be made known. A prominent figure in Auckland local body affairs for many years died in the person of Air A gander Bell, of Pakuranga. Although in his 75th year, Air Bell had until recently enjoyed a life of considerable activity. He was clerk to the Orakei Road Board, and before that was clerk to the Manakau County Council from its inception in* 1912 until his resignation in 1920. Other local oodles with which he has been associated as clerk are the Pakuranga, Mount Wellington and East Tamaki Road Boards. In addition to his wife, Mr Bell is survived by two sons and a daughter. An ex-sergeant of the famous Highland Regiment, the Black Watch, Mr ■Thomas Nesbit, who served in Prance and later in the Balkans during the Great War, and who was seriously wounded, is being sent to England by the Red Cross Society’s branch in Dunedin. Air Nesbit came to New Zealand three years ago, believing that he had sufficiently recovered from his wounds to warrant him taking up farming, but his wounds again troubled him. and he was compelled, much, against his will, to seek treatment at Contecillo and in the Dunedin Hospital. He is well known in Scotland as an international association lootbailer.
