| HOW TO MAKE A BOOKCASE ! There are a, hundred-and-one . . . and probably more . . . tilings to bt> made from packing-cases. And though these may not have quite the “look” of bought ones, it’s such fun to have things in your room that you have really “made youttelf.” The cases may need to be scrubbed. And if there are designs or odd letters on the wood, some sandpnper and a Strong elbow will soon icmove them. A cheap floor stain will colour them. Or they can be papered . . . even with plain brown paper, and painted over when dry-. Get a strong box . . . and a lid if possible . . . about 2ft hy 2ft Gin and llin r o ]2in deep. The grocer’s shop will probably be the place to find it. If the box is not perfectly rectangular, carefully knock off the back. Then setthe sides true with a square, and nail the back oh again. C-arefully file and cut away all uneven edges. Inside, on each of the two sides, nail two battens, ljin deep and as long as the depth of the box; these are fer the shelves to rest tpon. One should be Bin from the top and the other 9in from the bottom on each side. Cut the shelves to fit in, either from toe lid or from new wood obtained from a woodyard. Nail the shelves to the side of the box ns well as to tli 3 battens, 10 make all firm. Bo sure to smooth all the. rough places with sandpaper, and finish it to suit yourself. A little curtain fixed in front keeps the contents clean and free from dust, aud you have a pretty little piece of furniture for J'c-ur wall.
