RAILWAYS DISORGANISED AFTER THE RAINS. Per press As-mr-mo” TAUMARUNUI. May 23. The railway services are held up by the slips and washouts. A big slip at the southern end of the Poro-o-tarao Tunnel has blocked' the connection between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui. Slips on the Main Trunk at Taringamotu, and washouts between Waimiha and Ongarue, held the service up for 24 hours. The line south of Taumarunui is also blocked, and is not expected to be open until late on Sunday. There is a big subsidence of the line at Piriaka. Passengers from t, trains from the North were brought into Taumarunui by motor-’bus, anc.' passengers from the South went by motor to Piriaka, and were picked up by the south-hound train there. This afternoon passengers for the South will leave Taumarunui and tranship over the washout at Piriaka to the South train. The same will he done with passengers for the North. There will be no train on the Okahu-kura-Ohura line until the middle of next week, owing to slips and washouts, GORGE SLIP CLEARED Por Prep* A PALMERSTON NORTH, May 23. The Manawatu Gorge slip has been cleared, and the road is now open for motor-cars, but not for lorries. CITY DID NOT SUFFER locally, except for a email clip or two, there hae been no damage. The Hutt river was considerably swollen, but has since subsided, though still above normal. A slip occurred on the Hnvwards side of the Silverstream bridge, but it was attended to, and traffic was able to pass. Telephone lines in the Wellington district suffered no interference of any magnifctfde, but telegraphic communication between Wellington and Aucldnnd has been affected.
