CIVIC ELECTION
CAMPAIGN ADDRESSES.
MEETING AT ISLAND BAY,
Messrs W. H. Bennett, F. Meadowcrolt, H. A. ITugjpns, and G. A. Troup, candidates for civic honours, addressed a citizens’ meeting at St. Hilda’s Hall, Island Bay, last night. Mr Vickery presided. Mr Bennett, a member of the present council, dealt with the duties of tho various committees of the corporation, and referring to the work connected with the sub-divisions of property ho said that a great amount of time had to he devoted to this subject, ns owing to tho configuration of tho city every sub-division bad to be dealt with on its merits
Dealing with tho milk department lie mentioned that it was in a flourishing condition, but ho was not in a position to state what the actual situation v.as, pending the presentation of the report to the City Council next week. Mr Huggins said he was not' out to study the interests of any particular section of tho community, but the people of Wellington as a whole. He thought the rates could be kept down, and saw no reason why they should be increased, provided the council, distinguished between capital expenditure and revenue. He also advocated the acquisition of additional recreation areas for the city. Councillor Meadowcroft dealt with city leases, and spoke at length on the subject of Playing areas for children Ho contended that more recreation grounds for young people were needed in the citv. Referring to the Zoo, he said the council could not charge for admission on Sunday as there was no empowering legislation to enable this to be done. Sucli legislation would not be considered without the authority of the ratepayers first being obtained by a. poll. ‘He would like to see such legislation enacted. He preferred that the animals should ho confined in a place ns pear the natural environment as possible instead of in cages. ' Mr Troup dealt at length with roads, stressing the value of bitumen. He also spoke on the recreation grounds, supporting tho views of the previous speakers on the Bubiect.
