SWEDISH BUTTER BOXES

STATEMENT BY DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD. Mr W. Grounds, chairman of the Dairy Produoe Board, in remarks made to a Representative _of the' “Times” on Swedish, butter boxes, said:—“Contrary! to statements' that have been made and opinions that have been expressed in some- quarters, the Dairy Produce Board was not responsible for Ithe importation of Swedish butter boxes. ' The overseas delegation. from the board, when in London recently, received a cablegram from the hoard asking it .to investigate, the position as to price and probable extent of supply. Thinking that this ' information, ,in itself, would be of no immediately practical value to the industry, the delegation, made arrangements with one of the largest mills for tlie board to have the disposal of their agency in New Zealand—if the hoard thought it desirable that any action should he taken. The delegation fully understood that it was outside the scope of the board’s charters to arrange for importations. When this matter came duly before the board in January it was found that dairy associations and private enterprise were energetically canvassing dairy companies regarding Swedish boxes, agencies. for which they had taken up. Tho board, therefore, concluded that it was unnecessary for it to do anything regarding the. establishment of a further agency, and it notified the Swedish company concerned to that effect. “The conclusions that ' have been drawn between use of Swedish butter boxes and Australian butter prices are amusing, in view of the fact that up to tho present only small quantities have been used by a few companies for .experimental purposes. The official report regarding their-suitability is that no odour or taint can ho detected in tbe butter after it 1 Has been in the man net' usual with our export produce. Dairy companies wilt therefore judge of the relative advantages and disadvantage of tho use of Swedish boxes.” ;
