MORALS OF IDLE CLASS

LABOUR LEADER SHOCKED. "SIGN OF DETERIORATION.” Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reoeivedi March 23, 7.40 p.m.) LONDON, March 23. Mr Ramsay Madonald, speaking at Porthcawl, and replying to the churches’ allegation that Labour is materialistic, said he wished the churches would open their eyes to the materialism of modern society. “It is not a question of creed, but of practice,” he said. “When you see the stuff now filling the newspapers it makes every decent man and woman blush, and wonder, what is coming over society. It is a sign of deterioration coming upon those who are not doing decent work. I -would be the last to say that these things are confined to one class, -but if society had more capacity for sacrifice, and was thinking and acting honestly, few of these things wcfuld .happen. “The power of wealth is enslaving ■humanity. I favour property, since a person cannot express his individuality unless he has enough to make himself independent. Tnstend of Tuling humanity through the pocket, we should by organised effort create more wealth, and distribute it so that all shall eujoy that wealth.”
