DRUNK WHILE IN CHARGE OF MOTOR-CAR. SEVERELY DEALT WITH. For being drunk utile in charge of a motor-car, William Henry Carlyle appeared at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., presided. Sub-Inspector Hollis, in putting the facts of the case before the couit, stated that the man iu company with another when driving along Adelaide road had bumped into another car. There was not much damage dene. The occupant of the other car drove on leaving Carlyle trying to start the car's engine. Shortly afterwards, however, Carlyle overtook the same motorist and humped into his car again, this time causing some extent-of damage. The driver of the other car then called the police arid it was found alien Carlyle got out of his ear that he was so drunk he could not support himself. Mr Sicvwright. counsel for defendant, stated that the man was an experienced driver. He had recently returned from the tropics, bringing with him a disease which from time to time affected him to some extent. On the day in question the man had had an attack c-f the illness and had not been able to eat any lunch. As an antidote for his trouble he had heen drinking port wine, brandy, schnapps arid sherry. Counsel contended that his client’s condition was the result of a sudden collapse brought on by tlio illnc.-a more so than by the effects of liquor, and hoped that after taking the facts cf the case into consideration the magistrate might deal with the case with the utmost leniency. Carlyle was fined £25, with 10s costs He wa3 ordered to make good the damage done to the other car to the extent of 355. and his driving license was suspended for a period of 12 months.
