MASTER LUCERNE WINS MAIDEN. , All the acceptors started in the Maiden Handicap, and Red Imp, who ran second ' in the Trial Plate on Friday, was made a good favourite, with Hallownoon and Master Lucerne next in demand Mas-, ter Lucerne soon took charge and established a lead from Hallownoon, brand Lupin and Red Imp. Master Lucerne was stifi in charge at the turn and at the bottom of the straight he was challenged: by Hallownoon, but shook him off. Then Kyla came with a late run, and Master Lucerne lasted just long enough to win by a head. Hallownoon was a close third and Novar was fourth. RATIONAL WINS COMFORTABLY. Only five started in the Greatford Hanr dicap. Rational was an odds-on favourite, and there was fair support for Shut Eye. Shut Eye led Rational to the straight, hut when Gray brought the top weight along he soon took the measure of Shut Eye and eventually ran in a oomfortable winner by a length. Ihapotoa was four lengths away third and Startle was fourth. GREAT DIYipEND IN HURDLES. Dubious, who looked the better for the race he had on the first day, was favourite for the Sanson Hack Hurdles, and Pinna and Pouri Hoiho carried more money than the others. Dubious was well up in the "early stage® and Lady Comet was close handy, but the latter got squeezed back on the rails and loot her position. Down the back Haligan and Mangawhero took charge. Haligan led into the straight, with Dubious coming fast Dubious cut the leader down in the straight and won by a length. Pinna was a neck away third* and Pouri Hoiho I and Bonomel were tho next to finish. ; Haligan was paying over ,£IOO to win, | and, of oourse, returned a great price for I second. : JIABTULLA WINS THE BIG RACE I Startle, Mountain Bell and Filette were l withdrawn from the Eraser Memorial, I the principal race of the day, Martulla, I runner-tip in the Cup on the jpreviou9 j day, and Alaric were the favourites, and Para also was well > Para, Ruby Ring, and Happy Days led through the straight, with Alaric and Martulla well back and Whetunui last. Running along the hack Ruby Ring was out in front, well clear of the field, Whetunui was m a hopeless position and Alaric and Martulla were at the tail of the others. Three furlongs from home Alaric and Martulla moved up and they were both nicely placed at the home bend. Ruby Ring led into the straight, and when tho field was straightened! up for home Alaric and. Martulla* were alongside them. There* was a brief struggle. Ruby Ring was the first to he beaten, and then Alaric found it impossible to keep with Martulla, who finished in rare style and went away to win by three lengths. Alaric was a couple of lengths ahead of Ruby Ring and Happy Days, who 'finished together, j Martulla was very nicely handled by B>. j H.* Morris. WARM FAVOURITE DEFEATED Anticipate and Sanalino were scratched from tho Rangitoto Hack Handicap, and Archeen was sent out favourite, touching a very short price. Tho favourite, however, was not quite equal to the task set it. Loyal Maid hit the front long before the tnisiness end of the contest was undertaken, and, though Archeen challenged in the straight, he could not get to Loyal Maid, who won by nearly a length. Mountain Ore and Kilburn were the next to finish. Loyal Maid paid nearly a score; • ANOTHER BIG DIVIDEND. The only withdrawal from the Ngaio Hack Welter was Eken with 11.9 in the saddle Brigadier Bill was made favourite, and there was also a lot money for Merry Queen. The race provided a great finish between Merry Queen and Red Head, and the latter got the decision by a narrow margin. Brigadier Bill was a fair third and Ardfinnan fourth. A FOR IHAPOTOA. Favourites failed again in the PareWanui Welter, from which the scratchings were Alaric and Fillette. Mountain Bell was made a better favourite than' Brigadier Bill, who had contested the previous race, and the well handicapped Ihapotoa. Brigadier Bill was prominent in the early stages, but in the straight Ihapotoa cut him down find won well by a couple of lengths from. Mountain, Bell, who finished fast. Happy Days was most prominent of the others at the finish. j THE MEETING ENDS. Papaponga was the big tip for the Farewell Handicap, but the New Plymouth gelding was beaten out of a place, 1 and in the finish the victory went to the 1 moderately backed Gold Clip, one of P. j Scally’s team. Euphonium, who was well I fancied, was second, and Miss O’Dille third.
