NEW ZEALAND WINS

FINE RECORD IN SET WEIGHT RACES. If New Zealanders have ample reasons for taking pride in the achievements on the Australian race tracks of their seasoned horses (writes “Pilot” in the “Referee”), such as Gloaming and The Hawk, they have equal reason to be gratified with the exploits of the two-year-olds, who have picked up plums for horses of their age, the progeny of Absurd having heen particularly suooe9sful. One of the fallacious anti-totalisator arguments that used to be put forward by the machine’s opponents in Australia was that “It had killed thoroughbred breeding in New Zealand.” It always puzzled me How they arrived at that conclusion. Two or three big studs were dispersed, just as have’ been in Australia, hut others took their place, and thoroughbreds were never more valuable in New Zealand: than at present. Not only is there a strong local demand, hut Australian buyers give high prices for New Zealand youngsters. Nor is that surprising, in view oF the deeds m Australia of horses bred) in New Zealand. A SATISFIED BREEDER. Mr W, <x. Stead, in iparticular, has reason to be well pleased with the result of four of the .principal two-year-old races run in Sydney and Melbourne this season. He is the bi’eeder of Nincompoop (A.J.O. Breeders* Plate), Chignon (Gimcrack Stakes), Poetaster (V.R.O. Sires* Produoe Stakes), and I/Os Gatos (Ascot Vale Stakes). They are all by Absurd, as is the three-year-old Futurity Stakes winner, father’s Voice, who is owned as well as bred by Mr Stead. A 9 Poetaster and Los Gatos will be competing at the A.J.O.’ meeting, horses of Mr Stead’s breeding are sure of further advertisement in Sydney next month MORE THAN THEIR SHARE. Commencinig with the autumn of last Reason, New Zealand bred or owned horses have played havoc with the w.f.a. races in Sydney and Melbourne. The Hawk won the St. George Stakes, Futurity Stakes. Essendon Stake*, and C. M. Lloyd Stake© in Melbourne, and, with the exception of the Futurity Stakes (in which he finished second to another New Zealander t (Father s Voice) repeated the diose this 6eason. Rapine,‘ another son of Martian, won the Autumn Stakes. Cumberland Stakes and A.J.O. Plate at Randwick in April; and getting round to last spring* Glentruin took the Warwick Stakes; and Nigger Minstrel* the Rosehill (Guineas. It was only through breaking hiS leg when he had the race weU won thai Ballymena did not add the A.J.O. Plate to Hie Dominion’s score., FURTHER SUCCESS PROBABLE. Gloaming, (though Australian bred, is New Zealand owned, and his share of Sydney and‘Melbourne’s plums last spring were the A.J.O. Spring Stakes and Craven Plate,' and the Melbourne Stakes. The races enumerated make an imposing list for a little over a year, and in Sydney the coming month is sure to add to New Zealand’s successes. Three of the four runners for the last Graven Plate were New Zealand representatives, and unless Beauford or Heroic can intervene, it seems as if we are going to see The Hawk winning the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick next month. . ~ . , Australian owners should .not begrudge horses from the Dominion suecsss in set-weight races, an our handicappers hold them in .too high esteem to give them muoh chance of winning important handicaps. OTAUTAU NIEETINO , PENALTIES IJJPOSIEjCD. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 20. The Otautau Racing Club have declared the following penaltiesßayswater Trot, Landlady*B6yds bhd; Wallace Harness Trot, Bushabye 12yds bhd, Landlady 36. .
