Separated from two companions, with whom ha was duck-shooting on St. Margaret’s Island, near Corner Inlet (Victoria). *Mr Aider, aged dS, ot Dawson, Gippsland. caught in quicksand in a mangrove swamp at tho end of the beach. Mr Alder could not free himself and gradually *he tide came in until tho water reached his armpits. In vain he fired shots trom his gun to attract the attention of his friends. Then, with the water lapping liis chin, ne made one more desperate effort .and freed himself. He crawled across the morass, and wandered through tiie thickly-timbered island for hours, until he was discovered at 6 o’clock next morning. It was decided at a meeting of tha Wanganui Education Board to protest against the Education Department’# policy of restricting school corridors to a width of six feet. The hoard unanimously agreed tnat such a space wa# impracticable r.nd too confined for school purposes.
