GOAL FOR RAILWAYS
IOARD OF INQUIRY SET UP NEW ZEALAND AND IMPORTED * GOALS TO BE tested. PERSONNEL OF BOARD. The Hon. J.'G. Coates, Minister for Railways, announced yesterday that a Board of Inquiry under the Railway Act had been. Set up to report upon the question of the utilisation of New Zealand and, other coals z>n the New Zealand railways. The personnel of the board is as follow: —• Mr F.VW. Furke-.t Fugi-eer-in-Chief. Public Work* I--., .rtment, (chairman). v ~ ’Mr R, ,P. Sims, aetiag-Chief Mechanical Railways. Mr C. E, Jenkinson, Eugincor-in* Chief’s Department, Railways. Mr T. O. Bishop, general secretary, Coalmine Owners’ Association. Mjf ; A. McArley, general secretary. Engine Drivers’, Firemen, and Cleaners’ Association. Mr Baines, Department of Mines. < Mr Locke, miners’ representative. .The Minister,' in announcing thd board' at a- late hour, said that the order, of reference was a wide and comprehensive one, and dealt not only with the practical: use of'coal in the Railway Department but also with-the gen eral economic effect of the, utilisation- of a variety of coal fuels on the railways. Ho-added that trials of coals wpuld not -he limited entirely to the New Zealand product, hut that the object was to. obtain the relative values Of different coals, both local and imported.
