Simmons and L. Mom (of Wellington) are at Auckland. Archdeacon B. M. Cowie has return-' ed to Hamilton, after a fortnight's holiday. Councillor H. D. Ysabel), recently wrecked while running in the service between Niue Island and 'Auckland, arrived yesterday morning by the'Tahiti, accompanied by his wife and daughter. There passed away reeently t ah the Christchurch Hospital, a highly-re-spected resident of Rangiora, -in the person of Mr Michael; Lucy, at the age of 89 years., A - native of County Cork, Ireland, the late Mr Lucy landed in New Zealand in 1872. Settling in Sydenham, he followed the occupation of builder, and erected some 'of the earliest structures in that district. He later removed to Rengiora, where he resided for 50 years. - r

The- chairman of tEe Southland County Council (Mr W. Norman), accompanied by Councillor G. Wraytt and the engineer (Mr Jtf. C. Basstian),, left for the North yesterday. They intend studying roadmaking conditions; in the North Island, and examining, the latest -machinery and appliance* used in Taranaki and elsewhere.

Air T. A. Moodie, manager, for Messrs Dalgety, Ltd., Palmerston North, who has been transferred to the managership of the firm’s branch at Napier, was on Saturday faxewelled and presented by the staff with a solid silver tea set on the eve of his departure. Mr C. R. Wallace (the firm’s auctioneer) made the presentation, and in a neat speech referred to the great esteem in which the whole of the staff held him after liis 21 years’ association with the firm’s branch at Palmerston North. The firm’s agents from Mar ton. Bulls, Feilding. Taihape, Mangaweka, and Hunterville also voiced appreciative remarks, Air Moodie suitably replying.

» The Dunedin mail room-staff connected with the transportation of mails to and from the railway .station, assembled in the mail room, at the Dunedin station, to make a presentation to Mr U. H. Simons (stntlonmaeter), who is retiring on superannuation. Mr M. C. Dickson (superintendent of mails), in the absence, of Mr C. A. McGregor (chief postmaster), m binding Mr Simons a brief bag, suitably inscribed, referred to his sterling qualities and obliging _ manner, and wished him every prosperity in his retirement. Mr Simons, in acknowledging the gift, referred to the good relationship which existed between the Postal and Railway Departments at Dnnedin. Mr Simons is well known in Wellington and Petone, where he wra stationed before being transferred to Dnnedin.
