BOWLING

DOMINION RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP BEGUN

MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED PLAYERS ENGAGE D

FIRST TWO ROUNDS FINISHER YEBTERIAY

More than five hundred of the leaejing bowlers of New. Zealand are engaged in the rinks championship. The preliminary rounds are being played on many city and suburban greens. - The results of the first two rounds, and the names of the rinks which last night headed the sections, are below.

"REAL TOURNAMENT Jult BECiNNINC.” "

The Dominion' rinks championship opened yesterday morning at ,Wellington under excellent weather conditions; and with the greens in admirable prder in spite of the hot weather and; hard wear of the-previous week. In all,lßo rinks, comprising 520 players, were-engaged; and the play took place in eleven sections—ten of 12 and one of 10 rinks. Section play will be continued until Friday- next, two; games . per.'-day,., 0f.25 headS'-each, being played, -while' iii.. the, post-sectional play; which oommenoes'on . Friday - morning three games, each of' 21 heads, will be played daily; NOT STRENUOUS TILL, FRIDAY. , Before play commenced, on the Wei-; lington Club’s greens yesterday the Do-) minion president (Mr F.' Meadowcroft) addressed the gathering, stating'that in; the -opinion of some bowlers,-the real tournament was only • ’Thja might be held .to. be proved by the - fact- that there were-144 entrieS.for the : einglt»; and' 316- for - the pairs/- whereas - 208 extra player shad come! forward for' the ~rinks: Whether there* were more juntriek for the rinks because, tbis was thought to be the more-sociable form'of 'game, or whether the players were out for at least four days’ holiday in rink play was a matter which only the com-; petitors themselves knew. Up till Friday the. conditions would not be strenuous, but when the post-sectional play of three .games a- day commenced; then it would be a serious business and one for experts. Anybody who suffered twq tosses could scarcely be regardld as pos-) sible champions. - Every team, of course, 1 had a,chance, but the rink whioh would have- to he watched was that from West End, skipped by Bremner, which at present held the banner. > ' TRIE RULES. Reports from all the greens as td their conditions were good, and on the. whole players were stated to be observ-: ing the rules. There were' -two- rule* which needed to be watched, that relating to the necessity for one foot be-, ins wholly on the mat, and the other forbidding the flowing of the bowl' for - a greater distance than 15 feet,. Dp to the present the tournament had been favoured with fine weather, Sind if this held, then players from outside could go home feeling that Wellingtonwas -not such: a bad place after all. A meeting of the Dominion Council ancl delegates from the various centres was held at the Wellington Bowling Club’s * pavilion last night, the Do* minion president (Mr F. Meadowcroft) presiding over a large gathering. * Mr Meadowcroft congratulated those present ofi hating such a good attendance, as compared with: that at similar meetings held in Christchurch last year, when it had been proposed 'to abandon such meetings ■ for * the future. The Christchurch meeting had, however, decided to-give it another trial this year; and- he trusted that .the l-re-sult of that night’s meeting would be that the meetings would be continued, and would be more and more successful each year. The idea in holding them was to enable howlers from all parts of the Dominion to meet together and make any suggestions "they might wish to put forward for tho good of tho game, . TRIP TO SUVA FINE HOLIDAY IN PROSPECT. The following letter was received from, the Town, Clerk, Suva, Fiji:—“l am directed by. the Suya Bowling Association to bring under your notice that the bowling rinks at Suva (7) have now been completed, and will be available from Easter onwards. An invita'tlon has been extended; through the chairman (Mr Wall), to the Bowling Association of New South Wales to bring a team to Suva, in May, Juno, or July, preferably, to leave by the new motor-boat Aorangi, which leaves Sydney, on May 7th. arrives ' Auckland 10th, and Suva on the 16th, and mv,. club are also, desirous, if possible of having a visiting teem from your association, to arrive either I by the same boat or by one of the re&nlar tripe of the Tofua. leaving in either of the months named. OFFER OF HOSPITALITY. “In extending this invitation to your association, "my club has directed me to say that every endeavour".will be made to make your etav here pleas»nt and in every wav a satisfactory holiday. T l -o Islands, as you know, in them months are -nerftot olimatiollv, and nothing would give mv club greater n'easure than to have you with us foUtbis yew special. . occasion. Our . membership be**" is about 90 financial members: and, if vou would kindly co-onerate to t.b“ extent of circularising the -rnetronolitan c!"bs I feel sure, that, the reanbnse will be ouite satisfactory. T think yon will agree that, the interchange of visits wliiob could he Robseonenblv arranged between the Suva Club and your.association would he in every way beneficial to th" same.” • ■ Mr ■Thojn'Won (Aum-lcyi'i said the-!; an identic"! -letter bad been receiver! at Auckland. j rmv MANY ■ TEAMS .. Mr Pragnell moved that. t ; 'e IJn. minion Council write to Suva .thankinu the Suva, Bowling Association for itinvitation, and asking how manv teams ■they desired the Dominion to send.

They would then be in a position to doal with the matter, and aee what teams could be sent. Mr Thompson said that Auckland had already replied in simitai terms. It was suggested that the invitaItion was not meant for the DominionAssociation, but for the Wellington Centre; tho letters having been sent to Auckland and Wellington because boats for Fiji left from those ports. Eventually it was resolved that the Wellington letter should he dealt with as an invitation to the Wellington Centre, which should, if possible, send a team or teams to Suva. v 1926 TOURNAMENT RIVAL CLAIMANTS. Air Wernham.-(Hamilton) moved that it be a .recommendation, to .the incoming Dominion Council that permission be- granted to the South Auoklarid Bowling Centre to hold its North Island Tournameut in the month of February, beginning February Ist, 1926. The date, he pointed out, would not clash with the Rotorua tournament, and the North Island tournament would help rather than hurt the Rotorua tournament. Air Fastier and Mr Smellie (Dunedin) stated that the Dominion tournament is to be held in Dunedin nox? year, also the South Seas Exhibition, and he feared that the. holding of the North Island tournament so early in February would interfere with the success of the Dominion tournament, as the Dominion tournament- would not finish till very , late in January: Mr Smart (Taranaki) said that Taranaki was also asking that the North Island tournament next year be held in Taranaki. IMPARTIAL CONSIDERATION. Air Afedowcroft said that the' council waul consider the whoja matter the following evening and would take, care that the . North Island tournament did not clash with the Dominion tournament in Dunedin. The claims -of the different districts that wore 'asking lor the North Island tournament next year would be impartially considered on their roerita. After some further' discussion the re? solution Was carried nem. con. INTER PROVINCIAL CONTESTS. Mr' J. AV. Hardley (Auckland) read a lengthy letter from Air J. Hislop, of the northern oity suggesting that a cup, similar to the Davis Cup or ' the Sanders Cup, should be offered by the Dominion Association to discover the champion bowler of New Zealand, each province to send in only one contest* ant for the event. . The matter, however, was not taken up by the meeting. NEW RULE PROPOSED. On the motion of Mr M. F. Barnett (Ohristchuroh) *it was resolved to recommend that the council should draft ; and adopt a rule-providing: that if a l player, on a mat more than six feet from! the ditch,'throws the jack incorrectly, the opposing lead may ' move the mat back before throwing the jack.

UMPIRES TOO LENIENT?; . ‘-.'v--.*', '. ' ENFORiCEMEINT OF RULES? : Mr Garrard 1 (Auckland) complained that: the rules as to having both' feet on the mat when delivering a bowl, and as to not' following a howl more than 15 feet on the green, etc., had not .been strictly .enforced thus far during the .tourriatafent.- ’ •: -Tho president asked if other- bowlers' had had similar”experiences; but -none responded. {,. Air Aleadowcroft said that the intenjtion had been to enforoe the rules. ! and a meeting of the' umpires had been | held before the tournament in 1 order 'to, secure uniformity as to their eni forcement. Possibly some of the umpires had been ;too good-natured in ■j enforcing .the.rules. Perhaps they did not like to speak to a bowler for fear: of putting him off his’game. The council intended, however, . that the rules should be enforced: MARKING BOWLS. * On the suggestion of Mr Barnett, it was decided to reoommend the council to pass a rule requiring howls to hear distinguishing marks on both sides. A meeting of the Dominion Council itself will be held this evening. OTAKMMATGH' TOWN -BEATS COUNTRY. (From Our Own Correspondent). t / Ol’AKl, January 19. The annual match. Town v.
