THE CATALOGUES

BROKERS’ REPORTS., Moists Murray, Roberts.fliyid'Co., Ltd., report aa" followa y ofi Ineir auction:— r ' ' SFor the third sale of the catalogue consisted of 3378 bales of wool, representative nf the *Wairarapa and East. Coast,' and Manawatu. and. Ranrrftikei districts, with several clips from Marlborough and Nelson. Taken aa.a whole the show of wool' did not reach the high standard set' in - the earlier catalogues, hut several., attractive lota were shown. The attendanoe of buyers was larger than r.t either of the November,or December sales, and competition was fairly spread., all' sections' of the wool trade being represented on. the. benches. Generally the sale.lacked something, of the spirit and heennese-of the. two earlier auctions, bidding, being nt times verv quiet, and only occasionally keen. Brices were at times erratic and irregular, .medium and lower , sorts maintaining December parity, while only occasionally were the' f extreme values nf last month forthcoming in the better class crossbred wools.'-. Lambs’ wool came in for the most spirited competition of the sale, and good 'pieces and skirtings were also freely hid for. showing little if any cßange. Bradford seemed the hulk of the wools sold, Continental buyers obtaining , a fair perc tion. and local mills operated freely in lambs and good pieces. At auction we quitted about 84 per; cent. of our . catalogue, and will probably .be able to dear wo V-fair' quantity of the passed (ota- shortly. There was a full attendance of buyers, representing all interests. .: The woofs .offered'from tho-North Island were wellmown and light in condition, hut Marlborough wools were -morp earthy, end heavier in grease than enstbmary. Catalogues did not contain so many super, Romneys the previous two sales. tb» hulk consisting of" average crossbreds. Bidding was brisk and well spread, though American competition was lacking,: except for a f-ew specially attractive lots. As a result.-• super crossbreds from to 1 48’s tuialities did, not maintain December rates, and fell Td to lid. Average grades of same qualities also - .fell about 3<k. On the other hand, ail grades of 40’a to 44V and-Sit's to 40’s met with strong competition from, Bradford’ and tlie Continent.- and advanced from id to : Id. the lower-grades exhibiting the" great-' er- advance.* To-day’s sale has. seen a narrowing of the margin between fine and coarse crossbreds. For halfbreds,’ the market was easier' all round to the extent of id to Id, We had a fair offering of merinos, for which prices round_about 33id, 34i<I, and 3£d were hid. The Dominion mills did.i.ot seem to he keen buyers, and prices were evidently affected by reports of a 5 per ‘cent, -to 71 per oent. fall in Australis. There was great competition for rll bellies and pieces not containing seed. All auarters competed, and prices showed a'.substantial improvement. As the closing date for'this sale was as far hack as December 22nd, fqw parcels of well-grown lambs’ wool were available, particularly : parcels elbowing, quality. Competition was good, and prices remained on a'ptr .with December. ; The following are some of-the resulta i rB J I v 6 bales. 223 d; D BfH O E, 12. 21id, 6,24 id, 4 lambs, 32id; K S/Aofangi. 8. 22. 6, 21Jd, 4,22 d. 4,203 d: Pukete/J M' K. 12. 213 d. 6. 213 d; U/Coal Stream. 7. 233 d; Greenwoodside/ K M. 6. 23d; I N E 5 11, 22d, 9 lambs 263 d; Stonehurst D.
