THIEF _OAUGHT IN ACT. ! CROQUET COMPETITIONS. (Special to “N.Z. Tunes.’.’) '.- OTAKI, January 17. Mr Arthur TTiOmson, one of : the Horowhenua County Oounoit surfacemen, met / with -• -very gainful accident. He was driving a horse and dray, and it is surmised that ,the animal stumbled, causing Mr,’ Thomson to fall heavily. The. injured ibun. hi a very dosed condition, reached ]H. L. Beauchamp’a house, about , a mite and a half distant', where he received immediate attention. The doctor’ waa then telephoned for, and on arrival, or? derdd Mr Thomson to hospital. Mr Thomson is suffering from some internal injuries and an injured arm. • The sneak thief is always with us. At Te Horo, • just before Christmas, half a doßen prime; goslings ready for the festive season, were stolen from Mr Frank - Best’s ■ property..•'■ On Wednesday night Mr and Mrs , Best were returning home .when they noticed a man' in ; the act of 'taking- birds. He hurriedly left, but as he is known further action will probably .follow. In any case the neit thief, if caught, will-get more than a lively reception. The Otaki Municipal Croquet Gluib’s garden party, held on Mr >,and Mrs Sen. Kilmister’s beautiful grounds, was favoured with glorious wea-. their. The attendance, . whioh included Mesdames Rhodes,' Williams, and Short, of Wellington, and several otlier visitors, was satisfactory, and all fully enjoyed the outing. * During the day-several competitions Were held, and practically everyone that attended took part. Mrs Davies, playing splendid shots, won the golf competition: Mrs Atkinson was successful in the French tournament; Miss Putt, showing fine .judgment, won the clock competition; while Mrs “Rhodes Williams won Monte Carlo in good style. At the conclusion of the day Mrs Atkinson, in a neat speech presented the prizes, thanked all, especially visitors, for their attendance, and attended thanks to Mrs Kilmlsler and Mrs Percdval, who had supplied a very appetising afternoon tea. Mrs Rhodes williams returned Ahanks on behalf qf: the During v,the ■jda.y pianoforte selections were ?given by Miss 1 Patching, While Mrs Davies ;«nd Miss Molly Field gave .elocutionary items,’ all bf which were fully appreciated Credit for the -success of the affair is due. to Mrs Kilmister, who. was most attentive to all, and to Mris Atkinson, who -ably-performed the duties of secretary. Other members of the . club are also deserving of thanks for valuable help.” - . _ “Mrs Smith and Mrs Williams played for the, Brandon Brooches during the week. A tine game resulted, the former, after playing splendidly, winning by a narrow margin. Mrs Eddy, of Otaki, is at present in Wellington Hospital, where an opera-’ tion is to be performed. Mrs R.; V. King (Dannevirke) has been staying .in Otaki, the. guest of Mrs Sievers. Mrs King left, for Wellington to-day.
