LEARNING TO SWIM

LESSONS THROUGHOUT N.S.W. 7000 CHILDREN TAKE PART. SYDNEY, January 8. There are more ways of teaching than in the class-room. School teaohers forsook cane and chalk yesterday for swimming costumes, when the Education Department’s plan of teaching the children to swim was put into operation again this year. Throughout New South Wales approximately 7000 children had their first swimming lesson. The method employed; by the Education Department, doubtless will go a long way towards minimising the number of swimming fatalities. The results of previous years show that 85 per cent.-of the youngsters.who attended the classes were able to swim at the end of tlio ten lessons, and there is every 'reason to believe that suoh will be the case this year. , A collective system is'employed. Tbo children are given exercises on land which correspond with the swimming strokes. The scheme of teaching swimming during the Christmas vaqation was inaugurated in 1916, and. 40,000 children have been taught to swim since then. This number; includes those who have learnt at classes as far north as Tweed Heads, as far west as Bourke, and as for south as Albury.
