At Petone Recreation Ground this afternoon, will be held one of the largest -athletic meetings ever held 1 in the Hutt Valley. The entries constitute a recowl, and with.; Jhe provincial championships only ar'fortnight off, the .cracks should be at the top of their form. ROAD WALKING RACE. This event,-which, is being held in Conjunction! with , the Dewar Shield meeting, haa attracted 29 entries, which is very satisfactory. , The handicapping was. no'easy job so many of the men ’being practically unknown. The sicraixdi man, S. G. Mclntosh,: is conceding'-starts '' up to 16 . minutes. Competitors ehould be ready to start at 1.30 p.m. sharp, to enable the, officials to catch- ai train so that they may be at "Petone in time for the finish. The route will be Rdntoul street, Riddiford street, Adelaide road, Kent Terrace, .Wakefield street; . Jervois quay, follow the tramline into Fop-' toerston street past Lambton Station, Thorndon Quay, and thence to Petone, keeping to the road -all the way. After entering the Recreation Ground by the main entrance one lap of the oval wall be completed.Gbmpetitors are recommfended to arrange for someone to take charge of their clothes. . Cars : will be supplied, to carry the, clothes to Petone, hut competitors would fee wise were they to make their own arrangements. ' EVENING .MEETINGS. ■ The first evening meeting for the second half Of the season- Will be held ’at Athletic Park on Monday. At- the time of writing the events have not heyn, decided, hut everything . should be arranged by the time these notes to the loeses which these evening meetings incur, > new, system of allOcating the trophies , has been introduced; Tfee centre will still collect the entrance fees and pay out the trophy orders, bnt the club controlling the meeting will pay the ground toe. Tho value of the trophy depends; on the entrance fees, aii equal proportion . being allotted- to each event./ If the fees 'total say £4. and the events nums ; her five, if*, will jhe allotted to eaqh event. This ampunt will be further divided into -first.and'to«md prires. _ A record' 1 will be kept of all place winners, and. at the end of the season, one order Will-, -be issued for the total amount won instead of issuing orders after every meeting, . • » . It is' very muen regretted that the Value of the trophies had to he reduced, but os.the centre could not go on losing money i indefinitely there was no option. Hie: matter now rests with the runners themselves; the more com.-., petitors the greater the value of the’ trophy. -■ . ■ On the six evening' meetings held during-. November and- December the, centre losfi over £2O. . ANNIVERSARY DAY.

Two- meetings are feeing hold on-An-niversary Day, .'one at Porirua and one at . Masterton. The majority of the loeai runners are going out to Uorirua, hut - ai good -contingent visiting Masterton. ' ' . 'The Masterton meeting should he well worth seeing. It is i-umoured that Dufresne-'is vgotog up to -meet Rose'- in his home -town. 'lhe threemilo run- will 'be the Boxing Day race over again, but .this time ,will both Bave Doug.. Todd to contend-with.. Todd is runaing exceptionally well-just now, and-at Levin- on the 2nd he qasily held his own with- the local-:cham-pion. Among, those also going to -Mastferton are Dunbar, Kyle, Lead-better/ McIntosh, Wilkins* Melrose, Futtcr (2) and five of the ladies—quite a select team. A Certain .athlete refusod 1 -’! 0 go to Masterton because on his one, and 'only trip there he failed to get a ■place; . Had he run harder and worried less about the “bob” he - was ait the gate, he might-ihave had “better luck. . .. ;/ Campbell, • Jenkins' and’ Hill appear tq.be the only stars competing at' Porirua, : but what is lacking in 'quality is more than made up for in quantity. With Mr Kitto’s usual high, standard

of bandiioappmg some excellent races - should- be witnessed. WOMEN’S EVENTS. At the meeting of the New Zealand -Council on Monday night a motion to the effect that a 100 yards New Zealand women’s championship be added to the programme was defeated by five votes to four. From the Wellington association’s point of view the four members who voted for the motion ate to be oomplimeuted on the stand they took. The arguments used by those opposed to the motion did not hold water, and were nqt borne out by facts. The chairman stated that he was in favour, of athletics for women, -but as the majority appeared to be against -him he would 1 vote against tbe motion. He appeared' to be a little ibit fogged hy the arguments of Mt Guy, and apparently forgot that the November meeting ,he had said 1 that he was not ia favour of women’s events. After counting heads and coming to the conclusion that the motion would l be lost he evidently tried to put himself onside with the women athletes by mak ing the above-mentioned statement. The Wellington Ladies’ Club, intended Sending a relay team to the championship meeting/ -at Auckland, but as a result of the attitude of the Auckland centre towards the inclusion of the 100 yards 'New Zealand' champion--' ship, they have decided to cancel the tiip. This is a pity, as the meeting, will be the pooler by their absence. Canterbury will- now toe favoured with a visit, Auckland's loss is Canterbury’s, gain. ' GISBORNE MEETING. At the invitation of the -Gisborne dub. three local athletes, Jenkins, Baris, and. Priestley, left on Wednesday morning to compete there to-day. Given fine' weather the club should come out with a balance on the right bide of the ledger. : After competing/at Gisborne the above trio have been invited' to the Wanganui meeting on the 24th. There is also an electric light meeting at Hawera on the 21st, so they will have a full programme. I understand .Charlie. Jenkins will toe returning direct-, from and will not, be doing the Hawera and- Wanganui gatherings. STRAY JOTTING®. F. Trueman, late of..the, Gisborne Club, has joined up with the Wellington Club. - // Sqm Wogqn, the Selwyn Club’s captain, has returned from his annualleave looking fit and well. He will take a lot of stopping in the 440 yards hurdles on the 31st. Local cycling enthusiasts -are quite confident that Cyril Fleet will leavo the Oakley brothers well 'behind on championship day. We shall see. , Fred Hobbs, of the Athletic Club,' had four wins in tbe Christchurch district during the Christmas holidays. 'Bi. Preston will be one of our champions in the near future., He has One or two slight faults 'at' present which can-be eliminated with practice. In his ldng jump he just 6kims the ground. If be increased bis elevation he would considerably lengthen his distance. F. Brady, of Parama-ta, 'should do six feetjn the high jump .before he finishes. His- style is the only 1 one north anything. This lad is as yet only. •17 years of age, and he has had no coaching -whatever. After - seeing KrogUess jumping he went home and’-tried himself: cut. /but instead- of turning his -body in after clearing' the bar Brady fierne' his out.'Thie is where he fails at -present. < Andy Stevenson is showing great form, with the javelin. In sprint races he relies on his sister to uphold the -family honour. Ken Griffen, late of the local ’Varsity and ex-New- champion, won a half mile handicap from scratch in 2min. 4 .2-ssßo at . Auckland . recently. He will have -to be seriously considered • for championship honours again, -
