VICEREGAL His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) and Lady Alice Fergus soil left Wellington for Auckland yesterday on their first official visit. MINISTERIAL The Minister for Labour and Mines (the Hon. G. J. Anderson) left last night for Wyndham, and will return next Saturday morning. Among the arrivals by the Maheno from Sydney were Dr and Mrs Lancelot John Hunter, who intend residing in Wellington. Mr C. J. Playne, assistant District Public Trustee, Christchurch, has been appointed to the position of assistant controller in the head office, Wellington. He will leave Christchurch early in the New Year. A private cable message received in Wellington announces the death, at Dalby, Queensland, of Mr James Nicholson, an old resident of Wellington, and formerly a partner in the firm of Mace and Nicholson, building contractors. He was not married. His brother, Mr Henry Nicholson, resides in Wellington. Mr E. A. James, general secretary of the. New Zealand Political Reform League, whose health has been somewhat unsatisfactory of late, left for Melbourne by the Moeraki yesterday. Mrs James accompanying him. He expects to return to the Dominion from Sydney about the first week in February. Mr G. H. Shute, of Kuripnni street, Masterton, who is claimed to be the oldest New ZealandTEorn white man in the Dominion, celebrated his eightysecond birthday on Christmas Eve. Mr Shute was born in New Plymouth on December 24th, 1342. Although he was indisposed a few weeks ago, he was sufficiently recovered to spend a Tory enjoyablo Christmas. The Rev. T. Feilden Taylor was presented on Christmas Day with a beauti-fully-executed illuminated addrera in recognition of his noble efforts on behaU of the aged, the poor, and neglected youth of both sexes. The address was the work of Mr John B. Ingram. Mr Taylor, who was quite taken by surprise, made a feeling reply in returning thanks at the unexpected presentation. After 40 years’ service with Nelson Bros., Ltd., and Nelsons (New Zealand), Ltd., Mr H. G. Warren retires from active management at the Tomoana works at the end of this year. Mr H. D. Rogers succeeds in the management, and Mr Warren will continue for some time in an advisory capacity. Mr Warren, who, as a cadet, came out to New Zealand with Mr William Nelson to start the works at Tomoana, had thus _ been actively associated with the freeing industry since its earliest beginnings in the Dominion. The death occurred at his residence, Molesworth street, of a well-known Wellington resident, Mr Daniel Drake, in his eighty-fourth year. The late Mr Drake arrived in Wellington in lsßj and had resided in the city almost cofftinuously ever since. In tw earlv da vs he' was foreman of the firm of 'James and Co., furnishers, Lambton qnav. Subsequently, Mr Drake started business on his own account in Molesworth street. He was connected with the Thorndon Wesleyan Church since its foundation. Mr Drake suffered severe injuries in a lorry accident on Monday afternoon last, and passed awav, .as stated, on Sunday evening.
