HAWKE CUP

AT INTERESTING STAGE. Per Press Association. NELSON, December 29. When stumps were drawn in the Hawke Cup match an interesting stage had been reached, Nelson having three wickets in hand and wanting 24 to win. In the second innings Nelson had lost three wickets for 40 runs when Neale and Haycock added 65 and Langbein and Kemnitz also made a good partnership. The chief scorers are: Neale 45, Haycock 24, Langbein 24, Kemnitz 35, J. Newman not out 13. Extras' were responsible for 44 of a total of 199. Seven of the wickets, as in the first innings, were secured by Bay and Bernau, who were responsible for the majority of Hawke’s Bay runs in. the second innings. The game finishes to-morrow. The weather to-day was fine. INTER-LEAGUE FIXTURE The match between the Wellington Cricket League and the Mercantile League will be played at Kelburn Park on New Year’s Day. Although the Wellington League will .not be at full strength, owing to a team from that body being in Auckland in quest qf the Walker Cup, a strong side has been selected, and with -the Mercantile League strongly represented, especially in the batting department, a good game, should result. PETONE CLUB AT PARAPARAUMU The Petone Club journeyed to Paraparaumu on Boxing Day and played a very enjoyable - game with the local club. / Petone knocked up a- total of 303. Qapstick, a Waitaki High School boy, played a very attractive innings of 60 not out, Hamilton 44, Cate 36, and Brice 87. The feature of the match was the stand put up by Petone’s last wicket, Brice and Cate. They put on 136, Bhice hitting nine sixes in his . score of 87. . , Paraparaumu made 103. -Meggla hit lustily for 44, but Paraparaumu foundl Brice’s slows .awkward and secured seven wickets for 10 runs. Mailey, for Paraparaumu, who showed great promise last year as a “googly” expert, was a disappointment on this occasion. . Paraparaumu relied on him repeating his last year’s performance against Petone, but he was unfortunate in finding Brice iii a batting mood and his bowling average suffered accordingly. The members of the Petone team were entertained at luncheon by Paraparaumu v and a very enjoyable day was spent.
