A salvage quest for millions of pounds’ worth of precious metal and, famous Royal jewels buried in the; depth of the sea off the coast of Virginia is exciting America. The treasure quest follows the reported location of .the Ward-liner Merida, which, sank off Gape .Charles; Virginia, in May, 1911.-following a collision with, the steamer the Admiral Barragut. At the time it was-stated that . the ship had a quantity of silver- bullion aboard, blit recent r - oorts place the vessel’s cargo at much (higher ■ value. She is said to contain .£600,000 worth of gold and silver, and an enormous quantity of copper. Among the passengers* lost luggage, too, are said to be the famous rubies of the Empress, Charlotte of Mexico,/ widow of the unfortunate Binperor Maximilian. Two trawlers-were sent out by wealthy Americans to ; find the soot where the Merida lay, and an effort to salve her Is to ,be bequn soon.
