NATIONAL GATHERING

CALEDONIAN SPORTS CHAMPION'S MEET IN MILE AND THREE MILE - PIPING AND DANCING. Once again Boxing Day witnessed the annual sports gathering of the 'Wellington Caledonian Society, and a record crowd was present at the Basin Reserve during the afternoon. Wellington’s fickle, weather and the recurrent showers which made holiday arrangements speculative turned p’icnicers from seashore and meadow and led to a big muster of onlookers. The entries for the meeting constituted a record, and were run off in record time after a late beginning because of the soaking which the turf received overnight. All day the sound of piping arose from the circle of greensward while dancers of all ages and pipers of senior and junior standing tried conclusions in the oldest national dances and nirs in the compass of Great Britain. And the standard was so high that the judges did not always find it easy to reach a docision. several playoffs being ordered. SUNNY WEATHER. It was a sweltering day and not always easy for the Scots performers to give their best, hut with characteristic national vigour and determination they put their every energy into the accomplishment of the task which they set put to perform. His Excellency Sir Charles Fergusaon associated himself with proceedings, arriving with Lady Fergusson at 2.30 p.m. and being greeted by the pipe band of the Caledonian Society, the chief of the society (Mr R. H. Nimmo) receiving the Governor-General backed by an imposing array of stalwart pipers resplendant in ■ the Cameron tartan, lustily playing “Hieland Laddie” and “The Cock o’ the North.” <■ A FINE RAC®. The etliletic events also were many and well ..contested. The mile event, upon which much attention centred, contained three champions, all of whom started .from® scratch. These were R. Rose (Australasian champion), A. C. Dufresne (New Zealand champion), and D. Priestley (New Zealand ’Varsity chajnpion), all of whom hold titles' over one and three miles. The race was a good one, very fast time being made on a heavy track. It was won by C. O. Gibbons (65yds) in 4min 29sec, Rose and Priestley finishing next with nothing between them on their showing. These two made the race, alternately leading one another, but failing to reaoh the Levin boy Gibbons, who ran well and' won by a few yards from Rose, whose doggednesa took him into second place. GIBBONS AGAIN. (Hie three-mile race also provided a clash between Rose and Dufresne, who hung together, heading the field after two mihSs. They opened out in the last lap,' Dufresne sprinting at the final turn and 6eeming sure to win. but Rose holding enough to win a magnificent rgce by £yds. Mirth was general during the hoys’ 880yds walk, in whioh the marshal (Mr A. O- Kitto) had to he heavy in his disqualifications of the smaller lads, many of whom failed to appreciate the difference .between a 'walk and a run. The grand Caledonian amateur handicap was won by C. B. Allan with a first and a second. This carries with it. the Donild Gillies challenge cup, and is for the competitor obtaining most points in the 100yds, 220yds, 400yds, and half-mile handicaps. The McDonald cup and gold medal for the winner of the mile and three-mile events went to R. Bose with a first and a second. . THE OFFICIALS. ' The officials were as follow:—Referee, Mr Pu. W.
