EASTBOURNE FERRY

INCREASED charges. A correspondent writing on the decision of the Eastbourne Borough Council to 'raise the steamer fares between Day’s Bay, Rona Bay, and the city says:—“There is in reality no necessity for this increase in fares. On its merits the Is ,6d return charge paid the Eastbourne Council very well, and this increase is incomprehensible, unless there is a lot of leeway, due to mismanagement and ineptitude, to make up. It looks very much like killing the goose that lays the golden egg, for this raising of the ferry charges will certainly not attract increased public patronage. but will most likely tend to restrict travelling to the bays over the harbour. A man who wishes to take his family out for an airing on a holiday does not abject to paying a fair (barge for their conveyance to their destination, but he objects to being saddled with the making good of bad debts, losses due to defalcations, etc., and may ultimately decide that there are other spots of interest at which a pleasant outmg may be spent, which can be reached by the city trams.”
