WATERSIDE WORKERS

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. BASIC WAGE DISAPPROVED. Per Press A«wopint*o-, WANGANUI, December 16. The annual conference of the Water-B-de Workers’ Federation, now sitting here, considered the recent award for waterside workers as delivered by the Court of Arbitration. Regarding matters agreed upon by the Ooncuiatioh Council, delegates considered these a big improvement on the last award, bnt when it comes to a question of wages and other matters universal dissatisfaction with the award is expressed. The following resolution was carried:—“That the federation expresses in most definite terms its disapproval of the basic wage granted in the award. We do so on the grounds of its manifest injustice, as it does not provide a living wage for waterside workers in this country. We further express disapproval on the grounds that on the evidence submitted during the hearing of the dispute the waterside workers were entitled to a substantial increase in wages and not to the miserable pittance allowed by the Court.”
