THE SPORT OF RACING

OPENING OF WOODVILLE SUMMER MEETING TE KURI AND KOODQB WIN CHIEF EVENTS WINNERS VERY HARD TO FIND EVERY FAVOURITE FAILED (By Telegraph'.—“Times” Special Reporter.) PALMERSTON NORTH, December io. The general run of investors had a bad time at Wood.;ville to-day on the occasion of the opening of the Summer , Meetings Not one favourite scored, and 1 several of the .winners were outsiders. ' • - The Woodville Handicap was won by the little-fancied Te Kuri, and in the Oete Handicap Kobdoo defeated The Lamb, who was a solid favourite; The meeting was particularly well run, and there were . many evidences that the Woodville fixture still holds a high ' place among the best of the provincial gatherings. The weather was showery, and toward the,end of the day the course was greasy.

NOTEB ON THE RUNNING

(By “CArbine.”) Despite; the fact that the favonrites kept on getting beaten the totallSator turnpver at Woodville yesterday showed an increase of .£763. The amount registered during the day was £16,878. The special train from Wellington toWoodville was very poorly patronised.

only a few taking advantage of' the service which the club arranged for. Good;Mark might have,.won the hurdles hut for landing very badly over the laet fenen- 1 ■ The ‘Emperor, who has _ been a disappointment ever. since his- two-year-old career, exceeded the half-century when, as the extreme outsider, he won the hurdlesHe carried .the colours of Mr K. S., Duncan for some time, but now runs in the name of Mr W. Hill, and is trained by g“ G.‘ Caddy. But for the good race H. Gray rode on Peradeniya, Papappnga would have won the Trial Plate. Big money was put in on Gauntlet and it stayed there, but Gauntlet will soon improve on to-dayfa showing. - Mr B. Rlddiford’g English importation, 1 Lackham, finished well up in the Trial. ‘ He is far from attractive to look ,at. Light rain is falling, and the going will be soft for, the-second .day. Gaze ran far below his true form in the Woodville Handicap, and the performanoe should not he taken as an indication that he is going ofi, , He was in a leading position'barly and this spoiled bis chance. ■ . But for being sccidentaUy interfered with in the straight Killoehra would just about have won the big hanaicap. Me A, B. Williams's Comedy King colt Mimetie looks a good sort, and in his race he went like one. Queet should win eoonJ The Lamb was a bit unlucky to-day. and should win a six furlong race before the holiday meetings are over. Fool's Paradise ran a good race in the open six. . Grand Knight, one of E. Riddifprd’s importations, ran a. good race. He is a beautiful mover and should win soon. Keesing rode a fine finish whenbe won on Pronto. He is easily one of the best of the lightweights. ; ,
