A HISSING GHOST
STRANGE OCCURRENCES. The prosaic manufacturing town of Dudley, Worcestershire, has been visited a few weeks ago by a ghost, which was oausing great alarm to vinud people. Jn a certain house, at the dead of night, it is said, weird tappings have been heard, pictures on the wall have been shaken!, and chairs have been transferred from one side of a bed to the other by some supernatural agency. Worse than this, there has (been an uncanny hissing noise, causing the blood of those who heard' it to freeze in their veins, and their hair to stand on end. The occupants of the house called in a clergyman, presumably to lay the ghost. Ho is wisely maintaining an open mind on the matter until it is cleared up. One individual who boldly went to find the why and wherefore declares that £lO will riot induce him to sleep in the bed again. There are no offers. Many theories are advanced to account for the presence of the ghost. Years X there lived near the spot a man k assisted the common hangman in his duties, and it is said that he lent an article of clothing—perhaps pyjamas —to the tenant of the house, who never returned it. The ghost «s now believed to bo in search of it.
