The, War Department reports indicate that more than sixteen million civilians participated in the Defence Day exercises throughout the country on Friday. The world flyers were a feature of the Defence Day celebrations to-day, passing over the national Capitol and followed by another containing officials, - newsmen, and camera men. Throughout the country, the.day by millions with parades, etcetera, the object'being to keep alive citizenship and interest in defensive preparation, in accordance witlT the feccmmendation of General Pershing, who retires from' active .service to-night. _ The,church,.organisations, aswell as many liberal and socialistic sdcifeties, adopted resolutions deprecating the appointment of a day for such a celebration, on the ground that it tends to foster a spirit of militarism.
