CANTERBURY DEFEATED

LEACUE CAME AT CHRISTCHURCH FINAL MATCH OF ENGLISH TEAM’S TOUR. Per Press Association. CJHRISTCHU ItiOH., August 16. The English Rugby League team oonoluded its tour to-day hy defeating Canterbury by 47 points to 10. There was an attendance of about 7000 spectators. The day waa dull with no wind. The visitors were much the cleverer, and the issue was never in doubt. THE TEAMS. The teamo were: England (white) —Sullivan Can, Evans, Hawley, Rix, Parkin, Hurcotnbe, Burgess, Bowman, Bennett-, Darwell, Price, and Gallagher. Canterbury.—Parkes, Stewart, Sanders, Gilroy, E. and C. Fitzgerald, Kirwvu, McLeod, Woodgate, Davis, Mullins, Ellis, and Blavey. INITIAL EFFORTS. Canterbury (red) ..kicked off and a pass going astray gained the whites' twenty-five. Parkin intercepted nicely and the whites were dangerous. Canterbury, however, cleared, and C. Fitzgerald had a “hot from a penalty which fell short. England went away with a beautiful passing rush, Evans being grassed in the 'nick of time oy Parkes. The whites Were opening up the play and keeping the locals busy, only solid defence keeping them out. Hawley ultimately broke away and gave Rix a clear run in. Sullivan added the extra points. In less than a mißute Hawley set off, eluded a couple of men, then transferred to Parkin, to Burgess who ran round and touched down under the posts. Sullivan converted. Canterbury had a good chance of scoring but overran the ball and’the whites flashed down the field. Parkin sent the ball on to Burgess who scored, but Sullivan missed an easy kick. ■ Canterbury set up a hot attack' and Woodgate had a pot from which the whites forced. Following the kick out Harwell secured and sent Bowman and Price away, the last-named scoring and Sullivan converting. Half-time came with play in midfield the score: — England 18 Canterbury 0 GOOD OPEN PLAY. Beautiful open play by the whites characterised the opening of the second spell and it was not long before Parkin waa across at the corner. Sullivan made a fine hut fruitless effort to convert. From a penalty, for shepherding, C.. Fitzgerald landed a goal. Inside . his own territory waripicked up, flashed through the Canterbury hacks - and handed on to . Parkin who ran in- for Sullivan to convert. * VISITORS CAUTIONED.

A littie feeling began to be shown and Evans was oautionea. A couple moments after he was almost across, beating all but the full-hack. The reds combined in a passing rush which gained fifty yards, but the advantage was only temperaly as Gallagher broke through, passed to Hawley, to Price, who scored behind the poets Sullivan converted. From the lockout the whites aittacked but Parkin was laid out and the game was held up. On ’resuming Gallagher sent Parkin. away, with Hawley and Bennett in attendance. The movement ended in. the last-name 1 scoring at the corner, but Sullivan missed with the kick. - CANTERBURY LIVENS UP.

Canterbury livened up ana from a penalty for obstruction C. Fitzgerald kicked a poster, and England had to force. Foil owing the kick-out and then through a pass going ' astrajr Davis was enabled to score for Canterbury. No goal resulted. ; From a serum, at -hallway, Gallagher secured and passed to Huroombe, to Carr the last-named getting over at tbe corner. No goal resulted. Canterbury swept down the field and after -a short struggle, near the line, Gilroy obtained possession and passed to Stewart who. dived over far a good try. O. Fitzgerald converted. For a period play was exciting with ad vantage to neither side. Just before the dose, from a beautiful reverse passing movement initiated by Evans, Parkin raced across and Sullivan goaled.
