BARON VERNON TO BE RAISED. At long last the wreck .of the Baron Vernon is about to be raised from the channel of the Clyde at Dumbarton, says “The Syren and Shipping. ’ The vessel was sunk about a year ago m collision with the Canadian Pacific liner MetaKama, and has been a hindrance to navigation ever since. The task of salvage has been very difficult, and has necessitated the construction of a water-tight cofferdam from the after end of No. 1 hold to the stern, and of two large pontoons, each capable of lifting 200 tons when tied down to the ship. Ihe pumping plant has a capacity of 1,800,000 gallons per hour. After being lifted, beached on the bank, and temporarily patched up, the vessel will be taken to Glasgow for final repairs—if these are considered advisable. MODERN SALVAGE SHIP. Having sold for junk the erstwhile sloop of war Algerine, whose romantic career in the Boxer rebellion, in the South Seas, and in the Great War, ended in 1919, when she was converted into, a salvage vessel, the Pacific Salvage Company of Victoria are negotiating in England for the construction of a modern salvage ship, with a speed of 18 knots,' a cruising radius of 15,000 miles, and engines of 3000 horse power 1 (says the “Marine News'.'). Embodying the latest improvements known to marine engineering it is expected that the new vessel will grove to be one of the finest ships of her ind in the world. She will have a length of 200 feet, and, amongst other things, two separate tanks to supply oil to snips in distress on account of a. lack of fuel supplies. Her cost will be in the neighbourhood of 400,000 dollars. SHIP REPAIR PLANT FOR HONOLULU. The Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation is to enter the Hawaiian field with a ship repair plant costing approximately 3,000,000 dollars. This announcement was recently made by J. J- Tynan, vicepresidest and general, manager, whs had spent some weeks in Honolulu looking into tho shipping situation in the islands. Mr TYnan eaid there is room here for another ship repair plant besides that of the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company. As an initial move, he purposes to bring the big floating ’ drydock from Alameda, California. The dry dock is 525 feet long, .125 feet wide, and 45 feet deep. The volume of shipping touching at Honolulu will treble in the next ten or twenty years, in Mr Tynan’s opinion. He points out that during fifty years the town has changed from a native village to. a bustling, world city, and that this is only a start in its development. DAMAGE AT PANAMA CANAL. An Australian paper states that a great deal of trouble is being caused in the Panama Canal by the clam, or pholas oalva, which is destroying parts of the cement bottom and the sea walls of the wonderful waterway. It is reported that already damage to th© extent of ,£200,000 has been done by the clam. Tho destructive little creatures tunnel through rock and concrete again and again, until one or the other is riddled and perforated and broken up, and the earth is then let through and forced up, forming small islands, and so blocking traffic: Every now and then one of these islands bobbed up in the middle of the canal, and for quite a time no one was able to explain why. Some thought a landslide must have occurred and dislodged the cement -bed, so as to allow a slab of earth to rise. The discovery of the clam's work came about in this way. Several ordinary landslides had occurred, and. to prevent a repetition, certain "hills -were levelled, so that they could no; longer slide down by their own weight towards the canal. The work was finished, and the engineers congratulated themselves on their success, when, lo! one morning, an island popped up in the middle of the channel, and at the same time a cavernous hole was revealed in the bank nearbby. Here was something quite new and mysterious in landslides. Presently the dredges brought up great lumps of concrete, and these were found to Do riddled with holes. ' Then everything became clear, for wedged in some of these holes were the' clams, which had made the tunnels by using their shells as a rasp, turning from side' to side while they held on to the rock or concrete with their foot, as it is called. TUTANEKAI’S SOUTHERN TRIP. The Government steamer Tutanekai arrived back at Wellington at noon yesterday from a six’weeks:' cruise to southern and West Coast lighthouses and the outlying southern islands. The vessel

left Wellington on July 10th, and after landing stores at all tile lighthouses bn tho East Coast of the South Island, sailed from Bluff on July 21st. She arrived at the Auckland Islands on July 23rd, and proceeded thence to the Campbell Islands, whore she arrived on July 27th. Four men who joined the ship at Bluff were landed at the Campbell Islands to prepare for the shearing season there. Tho ship took her departure from the Campbells on July 28th, and arrived off the Antipodes on July 29th. The weather was very foggy, and the Tutanekoi’s ei ew were unable to make a landing until July 31st. She then steamed to the Bounty Island©, arriving there on -the morning of August Ist. All the provision depots at the islands visited, with the exception of tip l Bounty Islands, were examined and found intact, and 1 reprbvisioned where necessary. No sign of castaways was soon at any of the islands. The ship’s crew were unable to make a landing at the Bounty Islands owing to the heavy sea.
