CIVIC LEAGUE
MBETING OT EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive committee of the Wellington Civic League'was held in the Accountants' Chambers, Mr W. Stuart Wilson presiding. A letter was received from Mr B. J. McGowan, president of the league, forwarding 'his resignation of that position owing to ill-health and acting on medical advice. It was decided to write to Mr McGowan expressing the sympathy of the league in his illness, and the hope of a 6peedy recovery. It woe also specially requested that he retain office until the end of the league year, which expires shortly. Mr J. M. Bertram was .unanimously elected a vice-president of“the. league, in place of Mr G. Troup (resigned). ■ A discussion took place on. the con etruetion of the tramway loop in John ston street. Members expressed themselves as heartily in accord with the steps token by the Wellington Automobile Association, ns the loop meant the creation of three more "death-traps” in city. Strong representations are tc ha made to the City Council to hold up
the work until the position has been inquired into. In connection with the city milk supply. it was decided that, no further action be taken-* until the report of the milk investigation committee is published- 1 ' The following motion, proposed by Mr F. W. Downs and seconded by Mr P, Dl. Barcham, was carried in eiilencp, members standing: “That this meeting .of the Civic League executive expreeses deep sorrow over the sad disaster to the s.s. Hippie, and respectfully tenders its einceflo condolence with ifhe relatives and friends of the deceased master, seamen. and passengers who lost thier lives in this tragic occurrence.”
