A very old Maori resident of Mohak9; ’tl6ar - 'Waifoa, Mr Atahere Hungahunga, passed away a few days ago at the age of 73 years. Deceased had served in the Maori war, and - was in active engagement several times against 'The Maori rebel leader, Te Kooti. During one of these engagements he was imprisoned in a pa, and only escaped from - certain £death through a, secret, underground*- passage. ■ -
The funeral-of-C. S. A. Huxley (No. 44197) took-place at Karori cemetery yesterday morning. The late Mr.Hux- s ley enlisted with the Rifle Brigade in January, 1917. Amongst those present at the funeral .were. _ representatives of the Pensions .Department, Re- . turned Soldiers’ Association, Women’s National Reserve, and Airs Kiernander. The “Last Post” was sounded by Bugler Chegwin, and the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Fielden Taylor. s
Mr H. C. Foster, assistant manage* for the D.1.C., who! is taking, up a position at Lewis’s, Invercargill, was farewelled at a social gathering. On behalf of the staff he was presented with a tea service, and he was the recipient of a smoker’s -outfit frem the D.I.C. Cricket Club. Mr W. Simm, manager, and Air P. H. Halstead, managing director, expressed their appreciation or Air Foster’s services, and from the directors he received a substantial cheque.
There passed away yesterday, at hi* residence, Abel Smith street, Air Charles Vaughan Kreeft. The late Mr Kreeft was a retired civil servant, and for many years was a member of the staff of the Land and Income Tax Department. In his younger days Air Kreeft was well-known in the cricket and football fields. He was a member of the Wellington Cricket and Football Clubs, and has represented the province. A p a cricketer, he was a fast bowler and an aggressive batsman. Ho was a member of the team when the non." Mr laemonger joined the ratik« of the teaching profession in 13i5. was headmaster of Waiokaraka {Thames! _ School for manv vears. and in 1905 was transferred to the Epsom School, where he has remained ever since. Banks, referred'to Air Isemonger’s long period of service tvith the Epeom School, ana mentioned the • respect in which he is held by all with whom he has come into contact. Mr W. H. Newton, headmaster of the -Grev Lynn School (Auckland! has just tendered his resignation after 44 years* service with the Auckland Education Board. Air Newton, who is English borai. arrived in New Zealand in 1875 by the s.s. Alumhagh. Later he commenced his professional career as a pupil teacher at one of the Thames schools. After tiro years at the Auckland Training College he was appointed to the Waiotahi Creek School, then to Newton East. Newton West, Tararn. and Waiokaraka, where ho remained until appointed to Grey Lynn. His sound methods of instruction and high idea's have exerted untold influence for good upon all who have had the privilege of working and stndving under his direction.
