BOROUGH AFFAIRS
LOWER HUTT COUNCIL. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Councii was presided over by the Mayor (Mr W. T. Strand) last evening. Also present were:—Messrs A. J. Hobbs, E. W Hunt, J. Mitchell, D. A. Ewen, and G. Meldrum.. RAILWAY IMPROVEMENTS.
A letter' was received from tho Lower Hutt Progress League, in which it was stated that as the report J a connection with beautifying the station plots was furnished at the request of the council, the league was of the opinion that it should receive favourable consideration. The council was also asked to deal with the Railway Department re Cunningham’s fence. It was suggested by Councillor Mitchell that inquiries be made as to whether at would be possible to put plain galvanised iron m place of a wire fence. .This could be used for adveitising purposes. It was decided to write the Progress League and notify it that the council had rot funcfa at the present time to improve the plots in question. VARIOUS REQUESTS.
The council received a request from F. Jc-rness that the looal body connect the sewer to the boundary of his property in Western Hutt, and reminding tho council of the promise made in November last referring to the sewer. The requert was granted. Mr H. E. Kempthome requested a plan for a proposed road, on the Western Hutt Hill, which had been deeposited with- the engineer, and aeking the council's approval. It was decided to allow the works committee to view the road and report on it. In the meantime Mr Kempthorne is to he notified that any work done by him would he at his own risk. What Councillor Meldrum termed £ just complaint was made bv A. J Kearns, who stated that rubbish hail been placed outside his gate, and al ; .o complained of several other thing!. The council decided that if Mr Kearns supply the person’s name, who deposited the rubbish it will be glad to take action in his- favour. QUESTION OF LOAN MONEY. The works committee at its meeting decided to ask the council to consider the question of the loan raised ftm asphalting the main road being utilised for similar work on some of the secondary roads of the borough. Permission for this was sought on account of the main road being brought under the new Hutt Road Extersion proposals. It was decided to seek the borough solicitor's opinion on the matter. ENGINEER’S REPORT? The engineer reported that all the roads in. the borough were now in good order.
During the past month five concrete dwelling licenses had been issued to tho value of £4500, and four wooden to the value of £2750. Other building permits issued were, four shops valued at £3OOO, one concrete garage valued at £650, and four wooden garages valued at £lO5. The total value of concrete building licenses amounted to C 6150, and wooden structures to £3151, making a total of £11,301.
