"SONG OF AUSTRALIA”

CHORUS IN PARLIAMENT. PREMIER PROTESTS. Bv Telegraph.— Press Assn.—CoptyriffhF MELBOURNE, June 27. A unique scene occurred during a sitting of tho House of Representatives. Mr Yates (Labour), advocating the adoption of an Australian National Anthem, declared that Australians during the war had contented themselves with ragtime tunes. He added that if the chairman would give him permission he would demonstrate the merits of a fine anthem, namely, “The Song of Australia.’* Urged on by the Opposition, Mr Yates sang the first verse of the song, his Labour colleagues joining in the chorus. Later, when the Speaker took the Chair, Mr Stanley Bruce, the Prime Minister, protested against the scene.
