SECURITY OF FRANCE
NO MILITARY PACT EXISTS BRITISH FREAI3ER COAIPLAINS OF MISREPRESENTATION. NO UNDERTAKING GIVEN. Reuter’s Telegram Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright LONDON, June 26. In the House of Common! Air. Ramsay Alacdonald was questioned in reference to a statement attributed to AI. Herriot during an interview by the “Independence Beige,” which has aroused furious controversy in the French and British Press. The statement is to the effect that in the event of a premeditated German attack he (M. Herriot) had received a firm promise from Britain that, as in 1914, Britain would be on the side of France and Belgium, and he had the assurance of a firm pact binding the three countries. Mr Alacdonald complained that Ins conversations with AI. Herriot had been grossly misrepresented and falsified by certain newspapers. His communique of June 23rd and his statement of June 23rd covered the whole ground of the conversations, and the reports mentioned on the question were based either on confusion or imagination. There was absolutely no kind of undertaking as regards a defensive military alhanoe so far as his conversations with AI. Herriot were concerned.
