NAVAL EXPENDITURE

MR. MASSEY’S PREDICTION DOMINION'S CONTRIBUTION A MILLION A YEAR. “CANNOT BE AVOIDED.” Por Profss Association. AUCKLAND, May 10. The Hon. W. F. Massey, referring to Dominion naval defence in an interview, said that within a year or two New Zealand’s expenditure in that direction would necessarily be a million a year. That would be the position even if the question of the fortified base in the Pacific were abandoned, because in lieu of our contribution toward the Singapore project it would be necessary to obtain another critter for the Dominion division of the navy. The time must come when New Zealand would have three cruisers, although it was not yet, but there was m> doubt the Dominion must consider the development of its part in naval defence.
