“CAN HOLD THEIR OWN.” EXCEPT, OF COURSE, CRICKET. When expressing the hope that a team from New Zealand would be sent to the next Bisley meeting, the Minister for Defence (Hen Sir Heaton Rhodes), speaking at Trentham on Saturday, remarked that New Zealanders could hold their own in most branches of sport. “But when I say that,” the Minister added, “I am not referring to cricket!” This statement was greeted with rouoh applause. “Still I think that we will even come into our own in cricket some day,” laughingly continued Sir Heaton Rhodes. “We want more enthusiasm and more encouragement. We want to encourage all forms of sport in this country. Looking a.t it purely from a defence point of view, I want to encourage all forme of athletics.” Rifle shooting, he remarked, waa one of the most important of sports.
