A RECORD ESTABLISHED
BY OPPOSITION LEADER, “A FEW BRIEF REMARKS.” What was probably a record for a short speech was made at the prizegiving at Trentham by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr T. M. Wilford) on Saturday afternoon. After Colonel. Collins, the president of the N.R.A., and Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister for Defence, had addressed the competitors, Mir Wilford was called upon to speak. For some reason, however, Mr Wilford was disinclined to do so. In response to continued applause from the competitors he at last acceded to the request. His remarks were brief and to the point. He qaid: “I congratulate Colonel Collins on his speech ; and hope SiT Heaton Rhodes, as Minister for Defence, will ask my co-operation, when the question arises regarding sending a team to Bisley.” Mr Wilford’s few remarks as he took his seat were greeted with cheers and laughter. When the Minister for Defence rose to speak, he 6aid that he had noticed in one of the newspapers that morning that he was to make “a few brief remarks.” “I will take the hint,” remarked the Minister, amidst general laughter. His speech, however, occupied considerably more time than that by Mr Wilford.
