HOROWHENUA NOTES
CSHUUmEN HURT IN CAPSIZE. (Special to “N.Z. Times.”) An accident occurred near Mr A. J. Podevin’e residence, Otaki, on Friday. Mr H. Carmbnt, while returning from Te Horo, gave four school children, a “lift,” and when pear Mr Podevin’s met a lorry. Mr Carmont, a most careful driver, pulled to one side, bnt on account of the narrow nature of the road, one wheel of the oart went down a decline, and it capsized. The children and Mr Carmont were thrown in all directions, but, luckily, no one was seriously hurt. One Maori lad was under the cart, but the horse pulled the vehiale off, and he escaped with a few bruises. Young Hakaraia had his foot out, and was taken to the hospital by Mr Carmont, and is reported to be doing well. The horse escaped with slight injury only.
FOOTBALL GROUNDS. A deputation, consisting of Messrs J. P. Brandon (Mayor), S. P. Eddy, F. G. Davies, E. M. Mosley, and H. Nicolsbn, waited on Mr Wills on Saturday in regard to securing the college grounds for football. Mr Brandon, as spokesman, pointed out that, owing to the domain being put in thorough' order, it would not be available for football this season, and asked if footballers could have the use of the college grounds for the season. Mr Wills said he had no wish to hamper sport, and that if another ground was not available be would allow the use of the college ground. Mr Brandon gave an undertaking that the publjp would be kept in control, and that unseemly behavour would be put down with a firm hand. The Waikanaa and Reikiorangi school children will enjoy a holiday to-day (Monday) on account of the gymkhana to raise funds for their benefit. SUPS ON THE ROADS. Quite a large number of oars passed tErotfgh Reikiorangi on Saturday on the way to the Masterton races. Slips hampered progress in places, but, luckily, the various parties met no serious obstacles. Mrs Howard of Reikiorangi, is at present in Masterton hospital, and it is probable, that an operation will be performed. Some time ago, at Paraparaumu, she received an injury to her back. Miss Stubbings, of Reikiorangi, has left for Stratford, with the intention of scaling Mount Egmont. THE DOMAIN. A start was to-day made with improving the Otaki domain, and it is expeoted that the money raised by the carnival will be properly expended. Top-dressing, etc., will be done, and attention given to croquet greens and grandstand. The Horowhenua County Council’s staff, with their wives and families, congregated at Otaki on Saturday, and indulged in a picnic at the beach. Although the weather was not very favourable Jo such an outing all spent a pleasant time.
