WADESTOWN SHOW
SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION COTTAGE GARDEN AND BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY, LIST OF PRIZE-WINNERS. * Tho Wadestown Cottage Garden and Beautifying Society held ite autumn show on Thursday at tho club room, Pitt street. The show was formally opened in the evening by the patron of the society, Sir John Luke, who apologised for the absence of Lady Luke, who is away in Auckland. He was presented avith a .magnificent bouquet of asters grown by Mrs A. Sirett, the presentation being made .by Miss Lurleigh Watkins. Sir John recalled that he was more or lees responsible for the formation of the society, as when during the war he was Mayor of Wellington he called together the citizens for the purpose of urging the growing of vegetable products, and as one ot the results of that meeting the Wadestown Sooiety ,was formed. Sir John expressed the opinion that there was i much less vandalism in the city than there was in the past, and this he put down to the good work of the school teachers, who impressed upon the children the necessity for preserving the gardens and -reserves from destruction. In spite of the wet day and the adverse season the show was well up to and even surpassed those of former years. The judge of the flowers and vegetables, Mr F. Westbury, expressed himself as very much impressed by the quality of the flowers and vegetables grown in the district. Tho asters were a particularly-fine lot, there not being a poor flower amongst those shown. A root of celery and a dish of dessert tomatoes, shown for exhibition by Mr M. M. Simpson, were stated by tne judge to be examples of how those products should be grown. The trophy for flowers for the summer and autumn shows has been won by Mrs A. Sirett with 15 points at each show, total 30. Miss Battershy is second with 12 and 14 points, respectively, making a total of 26. The trophy for vegetables has hqen won by Mr George Nash, with 12 points at the summer show and 16 at the autumn, total 28. At the close of the show a Dutch ! auction was held, and the sale of the I surplus flowers and vegetables brought |in a substantial sum. |' The three exhibits of fruit showed what could he done in the district in [this direction, and in fact the whole | show was an eye-opener of what can be i done in the way of gardening in Wadestown.
