MONEY ON COUNTER
BUT MISSED THE BEER! "HAD TOUCH OF INFLUENZA.” A man named John MoDonald was charged at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with being on the licensed premises of the Britannia Hotel after hours. ‘‘Do you plead guilty or not guilty?” asked the clerk of court. "Guilty,” replied the defendant, ‘‘but no beer,” he added as an after!/ thought. Sub-Inspector Cummings explained that tho accused had stated that he had had a touch of influenza and felt “crook.” (Laughter.) The accused was seen to go to the hotel, continued the sub-inspecto-T, and had put the money on the counter, but the sergeant who followed him prevented him from getting the drink. ‘‘You will he fined £1 and costs,'’ said the magistrate. “You will he given a week in which to pay.” Defendant: “Can’t you make it a fortnight, Your Worship?” Tho extra week was granted, and the defendant left tho court happy, so happy that ho put his hat on before he was outside the sacred precincts, hut a rebuke from the orderly made him remove the headgear, -i) " -
