EVEN THE PRESIDENT

INVOLVED IN OIL SCANDAL SECRET MESSAGES DECODED: REFER TO “PRINCIPAL.” BITTER PARTY WAR. Br Telegraph.—Press Assn. — Copyright. Australian and N.Z Cable Association (Received March 6, 9.5 p.m.) , WASHINGTON, March 5. President Coolidge’s name was again mentioned in connection with the oil investigation, when Senator Heflin, referring to the coded telegraphic correspondence involving a noted newspaper publisher, declared lie believed tho message which mentioned a socalled “principal” referred to the President.. The mess Ates stated that the “principal’ ’ said: ' ‘ ‘There will be no disturbances and no resignations, although some reaction must be expected from the political attacks.” The Democrats are openly attempting to involve the nation’s chief Executive, indicating that clearly the oil inquiry has lost every aspect of a nonpartisan inquiry. It' is war to the limit between Republicans and Democrats, although it is apparent both parties are sufficiently involved.

It was revealed on March Ist that telegraphic codes belonging to the Secret Service were employed for the purpose of communication between various people, including a newspaper publisher, in order to prevent their examination by the Senate Oil Committee. The committee decoded the messages, and discovered such references as: “We neeci private wires in order to obtain better access to White House.”
