DESERTION FROM SHIP

SEAMAN SENT TO PRISON. Unlawfully deserting from the s.s. Karamea while Doing a duly articled seaman, resulted in the appearance at the Police Court yesterday of a young man named James Morton, Who was charged with the olfencs. According to Senior Sergeant Dander, the accused was working in the Upper Hutt when arrested on the charge. An official from the shipping company concerned stated that such desertors caused a great deal of bother to the company. He had been instructed to ask for a heavy penalty. As the ship had since left the Dominion, a sentence of twentyone days’ imprisonment was impeded.
