In March of last year only 2746 persons were in receipt of out-of-work pay in France. “You hear New Zealanders disparage their railway services, but nevertheless the railway services compare very fa vourably with the best American trunk lines. I was particularly struck with the courtesy of the railway officers. There are a great many things in New Zealand to be admired, and there is a great future for it. There is untold wealth in New Zealand to bo exploited -—but the New Zealanders do not realise it." —Observations of Mr F. B. Gilpin, of Pennsylvania, U.S.A., to a reporter yesterday. Ob one day in last August twenty-one boat trains were run from Victoria (London) instead of the usual nine, to cope with tho holiday traffic.
