Mr H. De Costa, of Gisborne, who drove through to Auckland by way of Tauranga, Paeroa, and Pokeno, is very emphatic in his condemnation of the roads of the province. "We reckon our own roads are pretty had,” ho said, “but they are wonderful when compared with the highways we passed over. Holes—you could lose a car in some of them. You have to slow the car down into them, and then increase speed to get out. If you took them on the run you would shake the passengers in the hack seat through the hood.” Ten miles an hour was about the limit in speed, except in a few spots, and it took a full twelve hail ns of careful driving to do 150 miles. “Is there no metal in the province?” Mr De Costa asks, and he suggests that it is time that the Highway Boards got seriously to work.
