Of the other thirteen, half are recent accessions to the party. Lord Chelmsford’s appointment is a complete surprise. He never appeared on the Labour platform at all. Mr Wheatley represents the Clyde extremists. Lord Chelmsford, first viscount of that name, was Governor of Queensland from 1905 to 1909, and of New South Wales in 1909-13. Some months ago he made a public pronouncement, in which he confessed to Labour leanings.
