James Roberts was committed for trial on the charge of stealing, in the company of two other unknown men, £lls sterling from Hector Goodwin, of Christchurch, by means of a trick. Goodwin told the usual story of meeting the accused and the friend’s introduction, the three card trick, his lending £ls to one of accused’s friends, and £IOO to another, with a view to attempting to recoup small losses in previous failures to pick tlje right card, then a lengthy, fruitless wait outside an hotel while the whole of the debtors were allegedly visiting a bank for money to repay him.
