FATAL DIVE

ACCIDENT ON KENT. FIREMAN’S PLUNGE OF 40 FEET TO THE DECK. In an attempt to dive off the rigging of the mainmast of the steamer Kent, at present berthed at the Glasgow wharf, a fireman of the vessel, named George Smith, aged 23, met his death yesterday afternoon. Smith endeavoured to dive from a height of 40ft into the water, but miscalculated his distance from the 6ide of the ship, and fell on to the deck head foremost. He was picked up a moment later by members of the crew, but was found to be dead. The deceased was a native of England, and appears to have no relations here. It is believed he is a married man, with, his wife in the Old Country. The body was removed to the morgue.
