EVENING SPORTS
WELCOME WEEK FESTIVITIES. BIG CROWD AT NEWTOWN PARK. - Over three thousand people were present at Newtown Park last night, when a Welcome Week cycling carnival was held, together with flat races, eide-shows, etc. The crowd of pleasure-seekers were out to mijoy themselves, and the sideshows, booths, and merry-go-rounds did brisk business as a result. A full moon aided the electric lamps to show up the ground, and all the events were out through without a hitch.
A portion of the ground was roped off for dancing, and manv couples “jazzed” to the lively airs dispensed by the Ist Battalion Military Band. Tho cyoling events provided some close and thrilling finishes, and were contested keenly. Several novelty bicycle races caused much amusement, as the contestants had - to push their bikes a certain distance and finish the rest in the saddle Following are officials who controlled the sports;—Referee, Mr D. Kitto; timekeepers, Messrs W. Ballintine and D Todd; starter,, Mr J. O’Sullivan: bicycle officials, Messrs T. Oates and G. Hall; marksman, Mr E. A. Shaw; judges, Messrs F. Hodgson, J. Peterson, and P. Thompson; steward, Mr G. A. Lusk. Following are the results: — ONE J4IILE CYCLE RACE. Ten competitors contested this handicap event, which was keenly edntested, and resulted in a win for H. Harrison (25yde), who led most of the way from T. Flett (ecr), who finished tecond.'and G. Bright third. TWO MILE EVENT. The two mile bicycle race was a splendid event, and had the spectators shouting with excitement. Nine started, but only four finished the course. The cyclists were bunched together over the first throe laps, but when entering on the fourth lap' .Harrison and Flett stood out from the rest, and the issue appeared to rest between these two. Howver, when entering the fifth lap Flett came a cropper in negotiating a corner, but luckily esoaped unhurt, although cut of the raoe : Harrison was never headed, and romped' home with several yards to spare. Bakewell was second, and Clous ton third Time, Jmin 23 1-Ssec. ' NOVELTY RACES.
Throe teams, consisting of three in a team, contested the mile novelty race. One man in each team had to run quarter of a mile, walk a quarter of a mile, and cycle the eame distance. Tho result was: Flett (cyclist). Sergeant (runner), Futter (walker), 1; Hall (cyclist), Melrose (runner), Mclntosh (walker), 2. Time, 3min 41 l-ssec. THREE MILE EVENT. Five started in this, but only three finished. Flett again came to grief when rounding a bend. Bright led most of the way, but Cloueton put on speed and passed him two laps from homo. Result: Cloueton, 1; Bright, 2; Bakewell, 3. Time, Umin 13 2-sseo. Medley race—Harrison, 1; Flett, 2; Baker, 3. An amusing pillow fight was staged, and resulted in W. Condon defeating al! comers. Boys’ potato race—L. Bowden, 1; T. MeEwan, 2. School relay race—Newtown (Diack, Gordon, Adams), 1; Marist (Bowden, Davis. Pack), 2.
